I spent a lot of time thinking about my next career move. I read loads of books, listened to hours of podcasts, and did multiple training sessions to make that decision. But, I was still struggling.
I had considered using a career coach, but thought it would be just the same materials I’d already come across. I had been following Charlotte’s posts on LinkedIn. They resonated so well with my situation, so I arranged an initial call. That went well, so, both excited and terrified, I arranged a series of coaching sessions. I was still a little sceptical, but thought it’s definitely worth a try.
From the very first coaching session, Charlotte identified blind spots in me that I had just not thought about, and she helped me to explore and change those new areas to identify how they played a part in my situation. Charlotte made suggestions of things I could try between sessions to get the most out of the coaching. I found this extremely useful. I thought I knew myself, but Charlotte’s expertise and experience identified areas I did not know.

A significant revelation was communicating the potential damage from continually increasing consumption. No matter how desirable the end product, the manufacture of ‘things’ comes with its own environmental cost. Through my work with Charlotte, I realised my geological background gives me unusual insight into the starting point of the supply chain for almost everything we use on a daily basis. The upstream consequences of downstream decisions aren’t widely known outside a handful of specialised sectors, and sharing this understanding with the end consumer is key to ‘eyes wide open’ decision making.
Charlotte helped me organize my thoughts on this issue and position myself to discuss the realities of constant consumption from a raw materials perspective. It also became clear how green infrastructure can get a ‘free pass’ simply because of its end use, despite carrying a considerable carbon debt and environmental impact. More, more, more is not the answer.
Thanks to Charlotte, I now approach these challenges with eyes wide open, ensuring that the actions we take are viewed through an analytical as well as emotional lens, and look for the least damaging way of generating solutions. I’m comfortable talking about emotive topics with a wide range of people, from many different perspectives, in a way that becomes a collaborative, shared learning experience.
In short, Charlotte’s personalized approach ensures that you navigate what is right for you, via intentional, often joyful, empowered next steps and actions. This process also helped me rediscover my sense of self, which had quietly eroded by spending too much time in a work environment that was the wrong place for me.
